We took our first trip to the Peds ER Wed night. Here's how it all started: We had Waterbabies class and afterwards, Isabelle was playing in the shallow end. Daniel was getting ready to swim laps and asked me to fix his goggles. I was about 6 or so feet from Isabelle and sure enough, she lost her balance and went under for about 3 seconds - but it felt like an eternity, especially since it takes me a bit longer to get anywhere being preggers and all. I got to her, picked her up, she wasn't coughing or acting like she got a bunch of water -just holding her breath and looking terrified. She quickly recovered and was herself in the locker room - running around, despite me telling her several times to stop. We got home and it was time for bed. It makes for a long night when Daddy stays to swim too. Isabelle didn't want to go to bed, she was fussy, barely falling asleep and then crying out, like she hurt or something. She had a really low temp, like 97* and just wasn't acting like herself. The only thing I remember thinking was one time, an old coworker of mine told me a story of a kid that died after having a near drowning episode.Of course, I was on the internet, trying to understand what exactly a near drowning really was - getting myself all freaked out, even though everything I read was more serious that what we had experienced. So to be safe, I called the Mercy Nurse to see what she recommended. After a million questions, she said to bring her in to be looked at. Of course. This was about 11pm and Isabelle was awake anyway. So we went to the ER, she hated it. Couldn't even stand getting her temp taken or the pulse ox on her toe. Long story short - she was fine, no issues from the pool incident but she did have some sores on her tongue and back of her throat that were probably viral in nature, causing her to not eat well (she hadn't been eating that much that week) and causing her pain. The Dr told us that pain is often under diagnosed in kids, so he prescribed Tyelnol with codiene for her to take care of the pain she was probably expereincing and that was keeping her up at night. They gave her a dose of that and waited about 30 minutes - she was a different kid. Singing, laughing, being herself. Also, the Dr cleaned out a bunch of wax from her ears - she's always had a lot of wax in there. She hated that! So anyway, after all that and 2 1/2 hrs later, she really did have something going on with her so I don't feel as dumb for taking her in.
